In this extract from the Shiva Sutras, Chapter 3, verses 25-26, Swami Lakshmanjoo explains why even a yogi established in God consciousness must remain in the physical body and live out prārabdha karma until death.
So . . . itham-āsādita-prakarṣo yogi –
. . . when a yogi has attained the intensity of this supreme state of God consciousness, āsādita prakarṣa, the ‘supreme intensity’ of God consciousness, he becomes . . .
शिवतुल्यो जायते॥२५॥
śivatulyo jāyate // 25 //
. . . he becomes just like Śiva.
He does not becomes one with Śiva.
He becomes ‘just like Śiva’ – not Śiva!
Turya-pariśīlana-prakarṣāt, by the intensity of meditating on turya – turya camatkāra – the one who has, prāpta turyātīta pada, who has obtained and achieved the state of turyātīta . . .
paripūrṇa-svaccha-svacchanda cidānanda-ghanena śivena,
. . . Lord Śiva, who is all-round full – with pure and independent consciousness and independent bliss – he becomes like Him, bhagavatā tulyo, he becomes like Him.
Why has he explained, he becomes like Him, why not Him, why doesn’t he become one with Śiva?
He does not become one with Śiva, he becomes like Him.
Because . . .
dehakalāyā avigalanāt tatsamo jāyate /
. . . he has obtained this body, this physical frame. As long as his physical frame is existing, he is just like Śiva, he is not one with Śiva, Because physical frame will divert him towards inferior states.
For instance: coughing, headaches, pain, stomach pain, ulcer, fever – all these things do not happens to Śiva. So as long as his body is there, deha kalā [bodily action] is there. This deha kalā is there, so he becomes just like Śiva, he does not become one with Śiva.
tat vigalanena
When he throws away this physical frame of five elements . . .
sākṣāt-śiva evāsau bhāvati ityarthaḥ /
. . . then he becomes one with Śiva in the end, when he throws this physical frame.
Tathā ca śrīkalikākrame – in Kalikākrame śāstra it is said:
tasmāt nityam-asaṁdigdhaṁ buddhvā yogaṁ guror-mukhāt /
avikalpena bhāvena bhāvayet-tanmayatvataḥ //
yāvat-tatsamatāṁ yāti bhagavān-bhairavo’ bravīt /
Tasmāt ‘so’, asaṁdigdham without any doubt, this yoga, this practical yoga of entering in God consciousness everywhere, one should learn from the mouth of his master. One should learn from the mouth of his master – but not with doubts – avikalpena bhāvena, just taking each and every word of his master as granted.
Don’t put any doubt while you hear those words from his mouth. If you put any doubt – in the least also – bas, you are away from that God consciousness. Without any doubt you should listen to him.
And “bhāvayet tanmayatvataḥ, then you should try to experience that state of becoming one with ‘THAT’ . . . till you become one with that God consciousness.” This is said by Lord Śiva himself.
So it is an absolute fact – truth.
Evamapi, although this is like that:
"yenedaṁ taddhi bhogataḥ"
By which karma, by ‘which action’ this body has been brought forth ‘into Being’, that karma will get its end by enjoying it and not by casting it aside. That karma – that prārabdha karma – you cannot overcome that prārabdha karma unless you enjoy it.
So prārabdha karma is unavoidable for each and every being.
He may be just like Śiva, he may be just ordinary person, prārabdha karma he has to overcome – he can’t cast it aside, he can’t abandon it!
So, for such a yogi, deha sthiti, this ‘establishment in that physical body’ is not atikramaṇīyā, is not worth casting aside, is not worth leaving behind. This deha sthiti – establishment in that body – you have to maintain till death comes.
