The Secret of Mātrikā Chakra — So’ham in Kashmir Shaivism
matrika chakra so ham weekly sangha Apr 13, 2026In this excerpt from our Weekly Sangha, Swami Lakshmanjoo reveals the inner secret of the Mātrikā Chakra — the recognition of aham and its living expression as So’ham (“I am That”).
He points to a direct way of perceiving reality — not as separate parts, but as a unified whole — through the union of the first and last movements of sound and awareness.

Swamiji: "This is called Mātṛkā, Mātṛkā cakram.
Now he puts the secret of this Mātṛkā cakra here.
The essence of Mātṛkā is, you should not perceive things one by one; don’t see,
don’t perceive the universe one by one. See what is in the beginning and see what
is in the end; take these two and combine them, and you have perceived
everything, you have perceived the whole universe.
This is the theory of pratyāhāra, ‘put the first letter and put the last letter, and
combine them’ (first letter is a, last letter is ha – ahaṁ), so this is the theory of
ahaṁ parāmaśa.
So by this ahaṁ parāmarśa, pratyāhāra is constructed by Pāṇini also. So, by
the theory of this pratyāhāra, take anuttara, the first letter and take the last letter,
anāhata (anuttara is the first letter ‘a’, the last letter anāhata is the letter ‘ha’),
when you combine these . . .
How can you combine them?
They can’t be combined.
. . . you can unite them only by means of taking them in one point – that is aṁ.
So ‘a’, ‘ha’ and ‘aṁ’, when you combine them in one point it becomes ahaṁ.
So this is ahaṁ parāmarśa, so this is the ‘perception of universal-I’. This is the
essence of ahaṁ vimarśa, which is the supreme mantra in our school of thought.
And at the same time it is the vīrya [energy of creation] of Śiva and Śakti, and
that is ahaṁ mantra. ‘a’ will go to Śiva and ‘ha’ will go to Śakti, and bindu (aṁ) is
union of these both."
